So I left Berkeley (exhausted) on Sunday night and arrived in DC early Monday morning. Over the next 48 hours I went to the Tanzanian Embassy twice, the Traveler's Clinic twice, and the dentist - no rest for the weary. On Thursday Mom, Dad and I drove up to Brooklyn to see Olivia's new digs, which are spectacular. I'll let her write about the specifics of her place, but the highlights for me were the bay window, the rooftop view of the Manhattan skyline, and the rustic expanse of Prospect Park. Brooklyn is indeed baby capital of the world right now, with strollers on every corner, and the people all seemed very hip so we dubbed it Berkeley East.
We drove up to the farm through a short summer squall (that's something I missed in Berkeley - thunder and lightning) and arrived at about 9:30pm. It was the summer solstice yesterday, Sankthansaften in Norway, and the light remained a deep blue over the meadows as hundreds of fireflies twinkled above the high grass, creating a magical scene. This morning Olivia, Dad and I saw a new bird in the dead tree to the left of the culvert at the beginning of the fields; the rose-breated grosbeak, a summer visitor we had never seen before.
