Along Fraleigh Lane the pussy willows are in full flush, the skunk cabbage is curlicuing deep red up through the last of the snow and and spring seems finally to have arrived. In a couple of weeks, the vernal pools down by the old stone wall in the orchard will be filled with peepers. Meantime, we've been clearing multiflora rose from the twin cedars at the end of the lane, the birches along the drainage ditch in the Prairie, and other spots. Talk about Man Against Nature!

We look forward to another Echo Valley Amazonia at Easter! And yes, Man v Nature is the root of human progress, as we're going to learn next week in class by delving into Guns, Germs and Steel (the documentary video) and acting out how humans made the transition from hunter-gatherers to farmers, and so conquistadores of everything!
